On a planet where resources aren't equally distributed yet which we all equally need, only a technological stalemate between large and powerful nations has stalled war. But this protection is not inexpensive; thus we need a reliable and strong source of government revenue to maintain an advanced military defense, in addition to effective law enforcement.
Given this reality, we can wrangle over the necessity of the other functions of government. But regardless of its size and scope, traditional arguments over whether a lower income tax rate raises more revenue than a higher one begs the question: Is an income tax appropriate in the first place?
Why not tax, and thereby discourage, behaviors one actually wishes to curb? Let's impose fees or taxes upon people who damage or monopolize public property, those who commit crimes or file frivolous lawsuits, nations who require our sacrifices and protection, and citizens who buy up huge tracts of land--leaving less available to us that costs that much more--land that we all must pay to protect?
