One cannot at once celebrate diversity and yet prohibit its characteristic practices. Consensus proves empty and meaningless when it comes at the expense of freedom and authenticity. When cultural differences divide us, it is enough that the innocent are not harmed; that the young in one community are not falsely indoctrinated against another; and that all may emigrate to other communities as adults. This standard could prove equally true within a localized direct democracy.
While different cultures afford their children differing levels of material comforts--some none at all--this alone does not justify intolerance for a way of life. Love is not spoiled by occasional want. But the protection of one's own children is the highest moral duty. And a protection of all children is also a moral imperative.
Those who extend this moral duty to a protection of all children ought to be as free to do so, non-violently and within the ordinances and laws of their local political jurisdictions, as those who feel no such obligation would be.
