If the electoral college were reformed to require proportional representation among the electors of the states, it would at least give third parties a fighting chance, more influence. And Ross Perot demonstrated that a wealthy candidate with a strong personality has a shot at a successful independent run for the presidency.
But the two parties have gathered so many loyal partisans into their folds and so entrenched themselves into the congressional committees that all private campaign contributions would have to be banned in order to restore any electoral equity.
