In a city racked by drought and famine, your family has stored away a loaf of bread that might spare others from impending death. Under what circumstances would it be moral to share the bread with those outside of your immediate family, if ever?
Would it be morally superior to forsake one's own family in favor altruism toward strangers? Should every crumb be shared out equally among all comers, including one's family? Or are such self-sacrificing, egalitarian approaches morally defective?
